Since its launch in 2002 eBird has been the primary database used by birders at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa to keep track of their observations. By utilizing eBird for our bird observations we are providing key data on the biodiversity of avian populations in the Arenal Volcano National Park and Costa Rica as a whole.

The data is easily accessed and utilized by educators, land managers, ornithologists, and conservation biologists. By providing support to this community of decision makers we can increase our effectiveness at conserving and protecting avian populations in the future.

Ten years following the launch of eBird, over 410 species of birds had already been recorded at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa. Now, with recorded sightings of 497 species of birds and 1,267 checklists submitted, over half of the birds found in Costa Rica have been seen at the lodge.

By promoting sustainability and the conservation of birds within the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa property we can indirectly protect the biodiversity of the Arenal Volcano National Park and the 2,040 km2 Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area that it lies within.

We encourage all of our guests to participate in birding while staying at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa and share their sightings with the eBird community. By doing so you will be helping us protect the natural beauty and diversity that makes Costa Rica one of the most popular vacation spots for eco-tourists and birders alike.
